MICHELLE ALLEN

Owner

Yoga has been an integral part of my life for more than 20 years and I have found great benefits in its practices. In the early years of my yoga journey, I had a strong physical asana practice which helped increase my strength, flexibility, and stamina. In 2012, my son was born and my perspective on life shifted. I now had this great responsibility of taking care of another person and it quickly became clear that the condition of my physical and mental health would directly affect my son. I became more inwardly focused and started to work on clearing physical, mental, and emotional clutter, some of which I had been holding onto since childhood.

This sparked my interest in learning more about the practices of yoga and I started to seek out knowledge. I attended retreats and workshops and classes of assorted styles of yoga. I read numerous books and incorporated pranayama and meditation into my daily routine. As my understanding of the practices and philosophies increased, my passion for yoga grew and I wanted to share this feeling with others. In 2019, I completed the 200-hour Sri Yoga teacher training. Currently, I am in the process of completing the Sri Yoga 300-hour advance certification. In May 2022, I bought the Uoga Room from founder Jenna Minnes.

Yoga has allowed me to transform my physical, mental, and emotional experiences into a creative force that helped me find more balance and joy. I now understand the importance of self-care and self-love and how to cultivate a deeper body, mind, and soul connection. My yoga experience and education have provided me with the tools to take control of my thoughts and emotions, find adaptations to partial vision loss and find healing during times of trauma and tragedy.

My goal is to incorporate these tools into my yoga classes using traditional methods and innovative techniques to show students how to improve physical, mental, and emotional well-being. I am visually impaired so I intuitively use the flow of energy and the heightened awareness in my other senses to make up for what I cannot see in the physical world. My class structure is primarily Hatha and Vinyasa flow focused on linking the breath to movement complemented by meditation and pranayama. I also teach Restorative and Yoga Nidra.

I live in Tahoe City with my son Anikin and our dogs Copper and Rubble.

ELLIE PERRY

MANAGER

I began my yogic journey in my late teens. At first, I was drawn to the practice for its physical benefits since I had always played sports, but was soon rewarded with the mental and emotional effects that yoga can have on one's life. I suffered from anxiety paired with sleeping problems and found yoga to be an amazing alternative medicine. Since, I received my 200hr YTT in Bali, Indonesia in order to share such a beautiful gift with any and all who are curious.

I strive to provide students with classes that are accessible for all levels while presenting a challenge for each individual. I feel that yoga should be a playful activity that also encourages each of us to grow, both mentally and physically, from the experience. I seek to provide a space in which students can gain awareness as well as insight into the workings of their bodies and minds. No matter the skill level or amount of practice one has, I encourage everyone to come play on the mat with me! I am excited to become part of such an awesome community of yogis and look forward to meeting you.

ALISON HARDY

Alison was born and raised in North Lake Tahoe. Her passion has anything to do with nature and the surrounding mountains in this area, from split boarding to trail running to CrossFit to yoga. Alison believes that movement is essential to health. Her classes vary depending on the ability of each class and student. She has been trained in Alignment, Restorative, Vinyasa, Hatha, and Budokon Yoga which has allowed her to explore a strong practice in handstands, inversions, floating, and sit throughs. With a focus on alignment and intentional movement through transition. She truly believes that strength and mobility go hand in hand, without one the other suffers.

CARRIE ADAMS

Some things you might be interested to know about me are:

1) I used to be a marine biologist, but let that go to be a mom. I decided to try some yoga classes out of curiosity but knew absolutely nothing about it. My first class was in a small room heated by one of those wall heaters that will grill you if you get too close. The teacher wore a gold, sparkly, skin-tight unitard. I was hooked.

2) I've been teaching yoga for the past 20 years. During this period I have taken numerous certification programs, primarily in Anusara Yoga, Alignment-based yoga, and Flow. I have also taken advanced trainings in anatomy, yoga therapeutics, and yoga philosophy. My teachers have included Noah Maze, Sianna Sherman, John Friend, Jimmy Bernaert, Carlos Pomeda, and Douglas Brooks.

3) I have worked with people of all ages and abilities, in studios, after-school programs, YMCAs, and senior centers, and have loved every minute.

4) Until early 2020 my husband and I divided our time between Tahoma and Berkeley, but we now live up here permanently, with our dog, Harriet. She is half poodle and half Husky. True.

5) Things I enjoy are reading, music, dancing, good food/beer/wine, DOGS, skiing, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, more DOGS, gardening, and cooking, to name a few.

6) Examples of things I do not enjoy include writing bios and tailgaters.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I look forward to meeting you in person.

DEBORAH LAPKIN

All paths lead to Yoga. My Yoga practice began in 1998 while recovering from a skiing injury. I started taking Yoga classes to help strengthen my knee and in the process found that Yoga offered many other benefits.

I became very interested in learning more about Yoga and how it can positively affect the body and the mind. I wanted to learn more about Iyengar Yoga which lead to a completion of the coursework as a certified Iyengar teacher at the San Francisco Iyengar Institute. I've been teaching Iyengar since 2004 in the Tahoe area. Iyengar focuses on the precise alignment of the body with the use of verbal cues and props. Iyengar helps anyone at any level and in most conditions to gain good health, mental peace, emotional equanimity, and intellectual clarity. I have studied with the masters BKS Iyengar and Gita Iyengar, (who profoundly influenced Yoga in the Western world), along with Patricia Walden, Joan White, Manuso Manos, and Janet MacLeod.

JAMIE MINTZ

Jamie Mintz is a registered 200 hour YTT, barre instructor, reiki levels 1 & 2, Aerial Yoga Instructor and paddleboard yoga teacher trainer. Her love of all things outdoors brought her from Montana to Tahoe. Her classes are a flow that builds on poses and  leaves you feeling energized, open and stretched. You can find this mountain Mama playing and exploring in the Tahoe basin and traveling  with her family.

JENNA MINNES

“You don’t worship the gate to enter the temple”

-Ram Dass

The most consistent practice of my 40-plus years on this earth has been yoga. Since I was a kid I have had heightened awareness of my body, many times this awareness was associated with pain, other times with freedom, strength, and power. The same experiences come to me now when I make it to my mat, when I climb to peaks, when I swim in the river, yet I have made it a priority to do my best to let go of any negative or positive associations related to my body, as well as my mind. This is the root of where my classes begin. I invite you to explore, to become the mapmaker of your body, to navigate the rough waters and the warm sunlight that exists between your tissues, between your thoughts.

The practice that I share with you is informed by my 20 years on the mat, over 1,000 hours of yoga trainings, 2,000 hours of bodywork certifications, and deep delves into somatics, trauma, and interpersonal experiences. My studies have been primarily in the Tantric Vinyasa tradition that believes that energy changes the mind, not vice versa. Pranayama, bandhas, mantra, and other intuitive, not traditional practices are brought into my classes.

I invite you to move the body that your soul has chosen in this lifetime so that your soul can remember who you are. All are invited to explore along with me.

JESS FLOUM

I’m a yoga & wellness coach (RYT-500), intuitive healer, and founder of Rooted Awakening Yoga & Wellness.  My yoga journey began the day I left journalism. I used to reveal systemic failures and injustices to help inspire positive action. I now guide people to end overwhelm, reconnect with their bodies, and activate their full potential. I'm trained primarily in Hatha yoga, meditation, and breathwork, with some training in yin and restorative yoga.

I first enrolled in Yoga Teacher Training in 2016. I dove deep into developing a practice, and everything changed. I found the tools to navigate turbulent seas with ease. I learned to relieve pain in the body and quiet my mind. I expanded beyond my intellect and tapped into my intuitive gifts. I embarked on a life-long path of adventure, learning, and unfolding. I now help people step into the best versions of themselves so that they can live life with intention, activate their dreams and carve out space to nourish themselves.

My classes are open to all students. They include a grounding breathwork exercise, physical movement (asana) that will challenge and engage beginners and experts alike, detailed alignment cues, guided relaxation, and lots of room for play. While I have a deep reverence and gratitude for the practice of yoga, I believe that play and fun are key components to connecting with ourselves and that it's important that we don't take ourselves too seriously. I look forward to meeting you soon!

STEPHANIE “LEMON” HYNDS

My journey down the path of yoga began like many do, as a way to stay active and flexible. Over the years my practice brought me a new perspective on life and has shifted in many ways. I received my 200 hr RYT in Florida, and continue to draw from the many wonderful teachers around me, as well as my own life experiences to create classes that blend body and soul. As a climber and lover of the outdoors, I enjoy fusing effort and ease to bring body and mind to balance.

And oh yeah...everyone calls me Lemon!

MARY-KATE “MK” JACKSON

My introduction to yoga was met with resistance—I didn't think I needed it! Fifteen or so years later, my practice has become my anchor for mental and physical balance, strength, and overall well-being.

Movement has always been a key part of my life. As a child, my mom described me as one who "never stopped moving." I was a collegiate athlete and have since discovered my passion for mountain biking, surfing, skate skiing and keeping up with my toddler! Yoga has been integral to maintaining my mobility and I understand the importance of recovery.

I would describe my yoga classes as a unique combination of mindful movement while strengthening, always an element of yin for recovery, and an emphasis on anatomy. My hope is to create a space that encourages students to pause, observe what's happening in the moment, and possibly gain some insight they can draw from later.

HEATHER COTANCH

Heather first found the solace of yoga while she was teaching 7th graders in New York City. After long days of telling everyone else what to do and fostering community in her own classroom, she escaped to the structured Bikram practice. After years of body-focused practice, she found the mind-body-spirit connection and a true spirit of community through Hatha yoga. Heather took her practice one step further and obtained her 200 YTT certification through Wanderlust in Lake Tahoe under the guidance of Meg McCracken and Shari Beard. She is continuing her education toward her 500hr certification through the Alayah Yoga School.

Heather aims to slow the mind and bring presence to the mat through gentle, but intentional, movements and breath work. Her own practice continues to be an evolution and she invites you to join her on the journey.

TRACY DESENS

Yoga has changed Tracy’s life and her passion is to share yoga, through asana (postures), pranayama (breathwork), and meditation.  In her caring and friendly approach, she brings awareness to the breath and gentle alignment of the body; opening, expanding, and listening intuitively with each movement.  Tracy completed her first 200 hr yoga certification in 2014 with YogaWorks, combining Iyengar, Ashtanga, and Viniyoga. She obtained her second 200 hr certification in 2016 through Wanderlust at Squaw with Meg McCracken.  Her vision is to live this life one breath at a time, doing her best, opening and accepting the present moment. As her daily meditation practice continually unfolds her deeper truths, she learns patience for herself, her loved ones, and others along this human journey.  In Tracy’s classes, you can expect a level 1-2 in difficulty, the use of gentle sun salutations to heat the body, an emphasis on alignment in postures, and the use of props. Loving this life, together.
